Picture this: You're in a video call with international colleagues. You hesitate to share your idea because you're worried your grammar isn't perfect. Meanwhile, the conversation moves on without you.

H. Douglas Brown, in Principles of Language Learning and Teaching, highlights a key insight in the chapter on Communicative Competence: real communication matters far more than flawless grammar.

Brown explains that effective language use involves not just grammar and vocabulary, but also discourse (how we organize ideas), pragmatics (saying the right thing at the right time), and the ability to get your message across in real situations. In business, clients and colleagues care more about whether they understand you and can work with you than about minor errors.

This principle shifts the focus from "sounding perfect" to "being effective." In my classes, we prioritize practical tasks like role-playing negotiations, giving presentations, and handling Q&A - always with real business scenarios. We still work on accuracy, but never at the expense of fluency and confidence.

Stel je voor: je hebt een videogesprek met internationale collega's. Je aarzelt om je idee te delen omdat je bang bent dat je grammatica niet perfect is. Ondertussen gaat het gesprek zonder jou verder.

H. Douglas Brown benadrukt in zijn boek Principles of Language Learning and Teaching een belangrijk inzicht in het hoofdstuk over communicatieve competentie: echte communicatie is veel belangrijker dan foutloze grammatica.

Brown legt uit dat effectief taalgebruik niet alleen grammatica en woordenschat omvat, maar ook discours (hoe we ideeën ordenen), pragmatiek (het juiste zeggen op het juiste moment) en het vermogen om je boodschap over te brengen in echte situaties. In het bedrijfsleven hechten klanten en collega's meer waarde aan of ze je begrijpen en met je kunnen samenwerken dan aan kleine foutjes.

Dit principe verschuift de focus van "perfect klinken" naar "effectief zijn". In mijn lessen geven we prioriteit aan praktische taken zoals rollenspellen met onderhandelingen, presentaties geven en vragen beantwoorden - altijd aan de hand van echte zakelijke scenario's. We blijven werken aan nauwkeurigheid, maar nooit ten koste van vloeiendheid en zelfvertrouwen.

Belangrijkste les: Communicatie is essentieel – en grammatica leren moet boeiend zijn, niet verlammend. Wanneer je grammatica leert door middel van echte communicatietaken, bouw je sneller zelfvertrouwen op en spreek je natuurlijker.
